A bit more about Steve

Steve Sanford is a Sioux Falls native. He graduated from Washington High School in 1966 and went on to study English at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, before getting his law degree from the University of South Dakota. Steve has been a mainstay at Cadwell Law Firm since 1974 and is the embodiment of the high degree of ethics, hard work, and civility that is demanded of the lawyers from the firm. Over his nearly 50-year legal career, Steve has compiled an unrivaled list of achievements for his clients in both litigation and transactional matters.

Steve is frequently praised for his loyalty to client causes, tireless work ethic, creative thinking, and excellent mentorship to junior members of the firm. These skills have helped Steve repeatedly steer his clients to uncommon results in a host of complicated legal matters in addition to helping Cadwell grow into the successful firm it is today. Steve’s credentials are backed up by an AV rating from Martindale, membership in the exclusive America College of Trial Lawyers and American Board of Trial Advocates, and recognition as a top-five litigator in the State of South Dakota by Super Lawyers from 2011-2019.

Beyond practicing law, Steve is active in the Episcopal Church and its governance and is active in land conservation and community affairs through management and governance of Northern Prairies Land Trust, the City’s Great Bear Ski Valley, the Washington Pavilion, and the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation. Steve and his wife, Kathy, have two adult children and are proud grandparents.
